DH's first day at school!

DH is a NQT and today is his first teaching day at school...he was SO nervous! He has a yr 1 class of 30 to look after all on his own with just a part-time TA. It seems ridiculous to expect so much of new teachers when this time last year most of them had hardly set foot inside a classroom...

He said he was going to text me and let me know how he was getting on, but nothing so far. Heard key in front door and started panicking he had been sent home in disgrace for assaulting the head/had a panic attack at the gates...but it was just downstairs neighbour home from the shops! Should have more faith in him...

thought it was a speeling mistake when i saw dh's first day at school, but obviously not.

you must be so proud of him then all that hard work and now hes a teacher!

good luck to him, hope he comes back excited and happy!

I am proud of him & I am sure he is going to be a wonderful teacher, but I am also very scared for him as he feels it's his last chance for a proper career so he can't stuff it up...and if he gets any kind of negative feedback it'll really rock his confidence.

i'm sure that he will be fine, its probably just the nerves talking. hopefully yr1 kids should mean that they are mostly excited about going to school and eager to learn so just some boistrous ness that you would expect form 5 year olds.

if he hasn't text you yet hes probably having such a good time and is so busy that he hasn't had achance. 3o'clock will come and he'll remeber that he hasn't text you and will be really apologetic when he gets in.

Just sending huge good wishes and luck to your dh. It's a fantastic job, but SO daunting at the beginning.

The NQT year is really tough, but Y1s are a lovely age group (I did my NQT year with a Y1 class many moons ago). I just hope he has a really supportive mentor, and that his colleagues are fun and helpful because that can make all the difference.

He will probably feel like he has run a marathon, while also being haranged by 5 year olds every 10 seconds LOL.

Let us know how his day went........

Ahh, thanks for the message bee! The PGCE year was a total nightmarepoor DS hardly saw his daddy cos he was always in the library writing essays, making lesson plans and putting things in files. So hopefully his first year at school won't be quite as badat least there are no essays.

interested to see how he gets on as my DH is studying to be primary school teacher and will be qualified in 6 months how did he get on looking for a job I keep hearing horror stories about lack of work... but then others say male primary school teachers are a minority in demand and he should be OK... just need to know so I can plan my retirement and life as wife of headmaster of local primary school.. am already turning into pushy wife!!

I think there is work around, mancmum. Several of his peer group of students got jobs at the schools where they were in placement, and all of them have got jobs to start this academic year if that's what they wanted. You do have to take stuff like school mission statements seriously, or at least seem to do so with conviction at the interview, so they can tick all their boxes. DH panicked when he went for a couple of local jobs and didn't get them so took one a little further away than we would have liked, but it's a really good school so he is pleased. At least I hope he is. Still not heard from him.

Arabica thanks for that appreciate it... do you mind me asking where in the country you are assuming you are in UK? I did hear it was easier in London than NW and so we are considering moving down south... Cheers hope it all goes well for him...

My dh used to get so cross with me for not texting or phoning him during the day from school, but often I simply didn't get the chance - it's such a busy day, and there are always a million and one things to do, and the time just disappeared.

I'm sure he's fine, just completely immersed in his day. He'll be teaching now, so you probably won't hear from him until 3.30 ish, by the time he's dismissed the kids, and chatted to all those eager and nosey parents who want to know all about him, and how their little ones got on.....Hang in there

it's OK--he made it through the day, and then had to attend a meeting straight afterwards. He feels like he doesn't know what he should be doing, but seems fairly confident about the rest of the week, even if his mentor didn't show up to find out how he got on.
