Staff Ratios for Residential Trips

Would anyone know the accepted staff ratio for a 3-day residential trip in UK. 40 Year 8 kids and 3 staff planned which just feels a bit short to me.

ooo. I don't think I'd be happy with that ratio either, I think I'd be much happier with 4.... Isn't it on the TES anywhere? I'll go for a google

MrsShrekTheThird · 12/09/2010 21:08

d'you reckon it depends on the lea? Guidelines I've just found say 1:10 but as long as there are more than two staff Hmm apparently that's ok....Confused

durga · 12/09/2010 21:10

It does depend on the LEA, it sounds fine to me. Although of course it depends on the type of activity they are doing.

Minimum for a residential is usually 3.

My D is going on a school residential next year; she went on the same trip in May too. Now in Y4, was Y3.

They have 5 children to 1 adult as their ratio.

bugger all info here

MrsShrekTheThird · 12/09/2010 21:12

The majority of schools' own sites seem to go for 1:10 ratio

tethersend · 12/09/2010 21:19

For non-residential school trips it's usually 1:10... although I think the rate is set by the LEA.

Are there other members of non-teaching staff going?

Are they going to a PGL-style place where there will be instructors?

Thanks. No I don't think there will be local staff , it is a field trip. Same group of kids went to France last year , with 4 and local staff Confused

Update : apparently 1:15 is acceptable for this age .

We work on 1-10 for residential trips which complies with the government advice.

spanieleyes · 17/09/2010 19:44

Our last 3 night residential had 11 year 6's and 3 members of staff. We are taking around 30 to a residential this October with 4 members of staff but this is "on-site" so there will be staff from the activity centre there during the day for the activities. We always have high staff:pupil ratios!

mrz · 17/09/2010 19:51

Just realised you said y8 children not 8 year old children our 1-10 is with 8- 11 year olds

Jenijo · 17/09/2010 19:57

I am a Educational Visit Co-ordinator and I wouldn't allow a trip of that size to go out.

The offical rule is 1:10-15 at this age, but I always work on 1:10.

As for the internation trip, I'd have definately not agreed to that and I would also have insisted a registered First Aider went too.

It's funny, but I'm a Guider too and when we do trips, we have a ratio of about 1:7-8 and we always have a registered first aider with them. Nowhere in the government guidelines does it say that there needs to be a firstaider on a school trip though!
