Hi all,

We are starting to home in on Buckinghamshire as the place to visit with intentions of moving for good schools - good state option, good preps, grammar schools etc.

BUT dh thinks we would get bored very quickly as there is nowhere really to drive to at weekends, no big towns to visit nearby (looking at Amesbury way).

Any thoughts - wondering what Bucks is like for a family. Where do people go and would this be a really bad move. Need to get it right this time so our children can settle and be happy - most important thing for me.

Also a little worried about crime - keep reading scary things about High Wycombe - is it a safe place to live??

Thank you for your thoughts.

I moved to High Wycombe from Cambridge in 2009 for a job. Have since married and have a little boy. Between 2009 and 2016, we've sampled living in different bits of Wycombe. DH had lived here for most of his life. We lived on a hilly winding steep road near RGS, then Hazlemere, then Holmer Green (both great 'villages', though really, it's all part of "Greater Wycombe") and now we're back nearer RGS in a new development in an area called "Totteridge". Totteridge was where they investigated the 7/7 bomb makers (in Kingswood), and recently there were a couple of arrests on roads near us, but to be honest, I feel safe. I walk the dog early in the morning and late at night, I've never felt the effects of publicised crime rates - but I think that's because policing is good here.

That being said, our house cost us a FORTUNE, because it's a decent sized family home near the station, the grammars, good indy preps, transport links etc.

It was a culture shock, moving from Cam - there's no doubt about it. BUT, everything is much more spread out whilst still being in easy reach. I can be in London within an hour, or Oxford. I have the choice of a Waitrose in Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Marlow etc, a John lewis, a House of Fraser, M&S and the usual shops in the Eden Centre, a cinema, theatre, bowling alley and the most beautiful natural landscapes.

I wouldn't move back to Cambridge. i actually really like High Wycombe.

This is a zombie thread.

I wish the font on zombie threads could be a different colour so that people realise the thread is out of date.

Sorry my family live in Bucks and it's super boring!!! Personally it's just too 2:4 children for me but I love city life in London! I dunno, there really isn't much to do and I'm glad I don't live there. Sorry! X
