Are there couriers for about 3.99 for lightish small items or did I only imagine that there were?

cos I have a smallish item to send and wondered if these so called cheapy couriers would be less than standard parcels even? any ideas

I think royal mail is by far the cheapest - and usually pretty reliable IMO.
