Not even wanting a response really - I bought a desk (for 30 quid) off ebay. I've been waiting a long time for the 'right' desk to come up in my area so I could collect it. Anyway, it did. Right colour (seemed fine on the photo) and just up the road.
So I won it, and went to collect it this morning, and realised immediately that the 'oak veneer' desk in 'excellent condition' is in fact beech and has some deep scratches.
However.. the lady that sold it to me was soooo lovely. She dismantled it as soon as I rang to arrange, then rang me back to ask if I wanted to come get it there and then. She was really excited about getting rid of it because her hubby didnt want it and she wanted to put her fish tank in the space and get some fish. I dont think she deliberately mislead me - she probably thought it was that colour and her idea of excellent condition is not the same as mine (as new).
So... because I'm such a sucker I'm letting it go. It doesnt match my furniture and I'm still peeved.. but I've had a really productive day otherwise...and its not the end of the world.
I just thought I'd get it off my chest
