How far would you travel to pick up an ebay item?

Someone has emailed me about a BIN price for my buggy. I replied with an amount and just had another email to ask if I could meet them halfway as they feel I'm too far away to travel to. They live less than 30 miles away. I don't drive so would have to ask my Aunt to drive me but I feel uneasy agreeing to it and just wondered if I'm being overly cautious and a bit unreasonable. BTW, I have offered to courier it on the listing for £10.

if it was something I reeeeally wanted and the price was very good I'd be willing to travel more than 30 miles!

If you don't want to meet them then don't. it's more hassle for you, and petrol costs etc etc.
you wouldn't be unreasonable to say you don't want to.

if they want it that bad they can drive the 30 miles for it

I would say that they pick it up or have it couriered, if they want it they'll do either or.
You shouldn't have to go traipsing off with your Aunt.

you are selling it no? I wouldn't be prepared to do this either. They should collect it or pay for the courier, it's not your responsibility to get your aunt to drive you to meet them. This is above and beyond IMO.

If they want it, they have to collect it or pay courier. They can't expect you to meet them half way!

Leslaki · 02/03/2009 20:56

Just say you don't drive...

Thanks for the very speedy replies!!!! I shall email them now.........

Well I would travel further for a more valuable item or something that I really wanted and didn't think was particularly commonly available.

I recently did a search for a chest of drawers and specified not further than 20 miles away from my postcode. But then I live in London and it can easily take an hour to drive 10 miles in London.

Why not email them back and explain your circumstances exactly as you have to us and reiterate the £10 courier offer?

Good luck.

Mintyy - just done exactly that!!

Hope they see sense!

Hmm, now I'm a bit confused about this bidder! When they asked for a BIN price I told them what the reserve was and that I'd end the auction at that price if they were to bid. They've placed a bid that is £10 below the reserve. I don't get it. They're not going to win it at that price because the reserve hasn't been met and the longer the auction runs the more people watch it and the chances are that it will exceed the reserve price and they end up paying more.

Just "talking out loud" I suppose. Anyway, I'm assuming that if they win it they'll come here to collect or let me arrange the courier.

I've travelled to the other side of the country before

If you have a lot of interest then don't end the auction if the reserve price is met. Just email her and say 'I've decided to let the auction run its course as there is a lot of interest in the item. However if you are the winning bidder then it can be couriered to you for the £x amount specified in the listing, or you are welcome to come and pick it up. Thanks for your interest.'

Thats the kind of email I usually send to cheeky bidders wanting something cheap.

mogs0 · 06/03/2009 21:21

She's still the highest bidder but Still £6 under the reserve. Auction has 2 days to go and 20 watchers so I'm hoping it'll at least meet the reserve! If she'd met the reserve when she asked about it I would have ended it early but I'll let it run til the end now.

YYour example email sounds good and I might save it for future enquiries!!
