Best way to deal with this?

I sold something on eBay recently. Buyer has received it and put in a claim saying it is faulty. She says it’s wrong colour and smells funny.

The photos clearly show the colours and description says brown. She thinks it should be white. It was washed before it was sent so the funny smell is probably fabric conditioner.

She clearly doesn’t like the item and wants it refunded rather than it being faulty.

I know this is probably doomed but what’s the best way to challenge this? Is it best to ring eBay?

Just accept the return, you won’t win.

Thank you, it’s a bit ridiculous, isn’t it?

Yes you’re doomed. EBay always sides with buyers, it’s very annoying.

Yep unfortunately eBay always sides with the buyer. I once sold a dress that I had correctly listed as size 12, as that was the size on the label, but that particular brand is small sized, so I put detail in the body of the description to say that whilst the label said size 12, it was more like a size 10.

Sold it to someone who clearly didn’t read it properly and said the dress was unwearable due to damage, with a picture attached of damage that was definitely not on the dress when posted out, clearly the dress didn’t fit her so she purposely damaged it to get a refund. It’s maddening, and that’s the last time I ever sold anything on eBay.

Refund only when you receive the item back.

Thanks, I’ve approved the return but haven’t refunded. Online advice says to wait for it to come back then report it to eBay as abusing returns policy.

Will give it a go. Not feeling too confident although I’ve told her it was listed as light brown not the white she seems to think it should be.

Any problems, phone Ebay customer service, they are normally really helpful.

Biggles27 · 26/12/2025 19:39

I’d phone EBay on Monday but in the morning as you’re more likely to get the Dublin office - they’re more helpful

Waste of time moaning about it. Just don't refund until it's returned.
