Anything I can do about this? Other than resell the item?

I don't sell on eBay any more, but something ordered at 19:13 and tried to cancel at 20:37 has been declined because "it has been despatched"

Has it really??? Do sellers really despatch items that late?

Is there anything I can do other than check the postage labels when I arrives for time ?

I am resigning myself to just having to sell the item myself when it comes...

Thanks for clarification from more experienced sellers. (I used to sell a lot but that was 15 years ago)

Thanks

I would wait until it arrives and then contact Ebay. They are pretty good with stuff like this. I have had this and Ebay forced a rapid refund.

It may not even arrive though.

Viviennemary · 05/09/2025 07:43

I think that's quite annoying for a seller. You had actually bought it. Wait till it arrives then try to return it. I thought on ebay once you had actually bought something you can't cancel. I suppose you could try saying you bid in error. Was it buy it now or auction.

TinyTear · 05/09/2025 08:13

It was buy it now.

It was a language learning book, second edition, but then I found the third edition so cancelled.

The cancel button was there and I gave the reason won't arrive in time as delivery was for next Tuesday and the third edition I found later has arrived within a day

I will follow procedures and my question was just, do people really despatch after 7pm?

Yes could drop off at a courier in the evening, so after 7pm is possible item is literally gone already. What is the delivery service? I hear some post offices are open evenings & weekends too.

lljkk · 05/09/2025 08:25

ps: as a seller I usually don't mind cancellations at all although I may have to suck up part of the refund fees, as long as item is actually still in my possession, cancelling is usually fine. I don't want hassle of an unhappy buyer and people are human, make mistakes, I make mistakes too.

But I am in a minority in being tolerant about that... and many things.

GretaGip · 05/09/2025 08:29

I sell on ebay.

When I purchase the postage label, it marks the item as dispatched.

My system then tells me I have 2or 3 days to drop off.

For clarity to the buyerI think ebay should let you purchase the label, and then mark the item as dispatched when the courier receives into the system.

Gassylady · 05/09/2025 08:29

Agree thats a bit unfair on the seller. I often wrap things after photos so I can be sure on final dimensions and weight for the listing. That means it’s ready to go when sold and I often use InPost drop off which is just a short walk away so yes I might despatch at that time.

That is annoying. But it's not really the sellers fault. Sometimes couriers do pick things up at night. But it's very possible the seller just wanted an excuse not to refund.

Thanks.

I am fully aware I fucked up, I was just hopeful as I cancelled within just over one hour it would have been ok.

I guess more 'professional' sellers do get things picked up in the evening...

< insert old lady voice > in my day, ebay was just for amateurs! 😁

I’m not professional, I just sell old stuff on Vinted. I often post things after 1900. We have EVRi, Royal Mail, and InPost lockers near me and all I have to do is scan the label and drop the parcel off.

rwalker · 05/09/2025 08:51

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s been physically dispatched
but I pre pack stuff do postage on line pint label and drop it off in morning
so they could of arranged postage

TinyTear · 05/09/2025 09:07

Thanks everyone.

I will just wait for it to arrive and then resell it myself...

Could HAVE.

I had this with an expensive car part coming from America which I tried to cancel 5 minutes after ordering and they said it was despatched. I did contact eBay and all they could say is that I had to return it when I received it. I did this which still left me £80 out of pocket though. And when it is a UK return I often find the labels provided by eBay for returns aren’t sufficient for the size and weight of the item.

As much as I am finnecky about grammar and this is one of my pet peeves, I would appreciate this discussion staying away in my post, which is being very civilised, thanks

i think returning it would still leave you better off than reselling it and paying the price extortionate selling fees to to honest.

WhatAboutTheOtherOne · 05/09/2025 11:51

One of my daughters sells on vinted and posts lots of things very quickly and lots in the evening. I’d say it’s more normal than in the daytime for a lot of people. The drop off boxes are certainly busy in the evenings near where I live.

TinyTear · 05/09/2025 14:26

Thanks everyone for your feedback, when I receive it I will contact the seller and see whether I return for refund or if I will just try and resell.

I haven't used ebay / Vinted that much lately other than some cosplay for my kids so have been out of it

That’s how it works on vinted.

TinyTear · 23/09/2025 09:18

Thanks everyone, in the end I returned the book, got a refund minus postage, so I am happy I only lost £3
