Potential bidder wants me to call him...?

I've got a few items up for sale at the moment. This morning I got a message from someone who hasn't put a bid on that just says "Can you call me" and gives his mobile number.

This is odd, right?

I've replied asking what his query is, but no reply...

odd - and no, I wouldn't call. And if you are worried they will be a nightmare add to blocked bidder list now.

Stick to messaging via e-bay and tell them you will not be calling, only contact via e-bay until they become a purchaser. Either they want your item or they don't.

Surely there's nothing they couldn't put in a message ?

Weird! I'd assume it was a con, not reply and hope they don't bid.

or add them to your blocked list so they can't bid.
