An item we won turned out to be an advert

I think this is a bit bizarre but maybe this is just something I'm not aware of.

My partner bidded on a listing last night and won it for a tiny price. I paid for it earlier not being sure what it was but assuming it was a badge/photo.

I got an email just now saying the item was an advert and what did i think i was winning.

The listing had other bidders on it and even stated it was new and that it would be posted royal mail 2nd class.

This is in no way a complaint, just want to know if it's happened to anyone else. The 'seller' seems to think me and the other bidders are silly for not realising it was an advert. Smile

I think you should report it as non delivery. If you physically placed a bid then it was a listed item. I am guessing they forgot to put a minimum price on it. E-bay is not an advertisement site and if it were you would not have been able to click to bid. Report them.

Agree with sherbert.

LilyBossom · 27/08/2013 12:51

and leave neg feedback and low stars immediately to warn other buyers in the meantime.

I would go to live chat if I were you - I guess they have other current listings?

volvocowgirl · 27/08/2013 12:58

Report them and leave negative feedback so other's don't do the same.

SouthernComforts · 27/08/2013 13:02

What item did you think you were bidding on? Just so others can be wary.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 27/08/2013 13:06

How odd! Have they refunded you? I would report them too. I am very curious as what item you thought you were bidding on though!

FlusteredFairy · 27/08/2013 13:06

No other listings up. I think it was a genuine mistake. It looked was for a bird society badge. I just though maybe this was a normal thing to happen.

Now they've got back to me saying they could send me a badge if i paid postage and they do this advertising thing sometimes because it gets more publicity (and is cheaper) than a classified. Shock

Gave them a definite no and told them that ebays not for advertising in that way. Had to ask for a refund. Cooling off then reporting them.

I am very confused, how can you bid on an advert surely if an item is listed and photographed with and a description then it is an item.
How can an ebay item be an advert, what was it advertising?
I know you have sorted it but honestly it is making my head spin.

LilyBossom · 27/08/2013 14:53

well - they are not meant to list an advert as an ebay auction - classified listing is a different matter, but you didn't bid on one of those.

Honestly, leave appropriate feedback and report to ebay and get your money back. He cannot ask you for more money for postage either. If they made a mistake it is up to them to put it right, and if that is underestimation of postage, then that is their problem.

Cluffyflump · 27/08/2013 14:58

What did you think the item was?

SuperiorCat · 27/08/2013 15:03

I don't understand either - can you link to it to warn others?

FlusteredFairy · 27/08/2013 15:32

The item looked like a badge so my partner bidded on it as 2 other people had.

The description said the item was new and the postage was listed as royal mail 2nd class.

How can an item be posted if there is no item to post?

Very annoyed.

How do i link and am i allowed to?

FlusteredFairy · 27/08/2013 15:35

By the way it was an impulse bid by my partner, so not annoyed about not getting the item just the sellers attitude.

so they had a photo of the badge but now say it is just an advert

you can paste the item number or copy and paste the url address of the listing from your browser/

belatedmaybe · 27/08/2013 16:04

Did you read the description? What did it say the item was? Adverts like this are totally normal on eBay. They are all over, usually for delivery firms etc. It is obvious if you read the description that they are not offering anything.
