COVERED BY BUYER PROTECTION IF USING THE PAYPAL 'SEND MONEY' OPTION?

If someone uses the 'gift payment' or 'Send Money' feature in Paypal to pay me for an item on eBay I'm selling, are they still covered by Paypal's Buyer Protection? They are not actually buying my item on eBay, just sending me the money and I am then cancelling the auction.

I don't want guesses here, I need hard fact, perhaps a link?

So you are sending them an item? If so send it tracked to verified address.

Oh and cancelling the auction and them buying is an off eBay sale and against the rules so you are risking your account if you do that.
