Winning bidder hasn't paid postage. What to do?

One of my listings has just finished and the winning bidder has paid immediately. However, she must have selected the "collect in person" option as the PP charges came up as £0.00 in the receipt. The problem is she lives on the other side of the country! There's obviously a mistake. What's the best way to approach this?

just contact her and point it out, tjhen invoice her for the postage

boogiewoogie · 06/11/2011 21:57

Okay thanks. Erm, thick question, how does one send an invoice for postage?

OP posts:
fergoose · 06/11/2011 22:22

refund her via paypal then send an invoice for the correct amount - you can't have 2 payments for 1 transaction

OracleInaCoracle · 06/11/2011 22:29

it may be that she paid on mobile, I had this the other day. paid, but the total that showed on PP was minus delivery. seller contacted me and I paid it straight away. blackberry have just updated their ebay/paypal apps which have messed things up a bit.

boogiewoogie · 06/11/2011 22:30

Okay, is that invoice via paypal or ebay? Sorry for being dense but I've not had to do this before. I can't find a "send invoice" button on ebay and I've unmarked it as paid so now it comes up with a message that it has been paid though I've unchecked it.

Send her a message asking if she intends to collect (she may be on holiday near you, or have a family member who is collecting for her, or have recently moved and forgotten to update ebay details) or whether it was a mistake, and then give her the option of refunding and doing the total separately, or ask her to paypal you the extra separately.

Honeydragon · 06/11/2011 22:32

I had the same as Lissie a couple of months ago, paid via app. The seller contacted me and I paid straight away Smile

fergoose · 06/11/2011 22:32

you need to log into paypal, find the payment then hit refund first - marking it as unpaid hasn't refunded your buyer.

then from ebay you send an invoice for the correct amount from the item page or by selecting the drop down box next to the item in myeBay

fergoose · 06/11/2011 22:33

and don't get her to pay the balance separately - 2 separate transactions for 1 item is wrong and you will have 2 lots of paypal fees.

BertieBotts · 06/11/2011 22:37

Paypal fees are a percentage, so it wouldn't make any difference. And if it was done outside of ebay it wouldn't be 2 separate transactions.

I know you're not supposed to complete transactions outside of ebay but since the main payment has gone through it I'd probably do this. Postage is only usually a couple of pounds anyway.

boogiewoogie · 06/11/2011 22:38

Okay. Refunded the amount but still don't have a "send invoice" option on My ebay. Does it take a while?

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 06/11/2011 22:41

you may have to wait for payment. if the seller from my transaction had refunded the amount, I would have had to wait til it cleared in my account to pay again.

fergoose · 06/11/2011 22:42

have you messaged the buyer and told her to pay the correct amount?

boogiewoogie · 06/11/2011 22:44

Yes I have Fergoose. Will that do?

OP posts:
boogiewoogie · 06/11/2011 22:45

I've really made a mess of this Fergoose. I messaged her to pay the postage. Then I refunded via paypal then I unmarked the paid sign...

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 06/11/2011 22:47

ok. have a lokk in the morning, when she has responded. theres no need to get panicky. its hard to know what to do in these circumstances!

fergoose · 06/11/2011 22:51

you haven't made a mess - the buyer can easily log into paypal and hit send money and enter the eBay item and your email address and pay you the right amount and they can also pay from the drop down menu next to the item in myeBay

I think it's a flipping cheek to not pay postage to be honest - seems to be the latest scam!

OracleInaCoracle · 06/11/2011 22:53

fergoose, it might be a genuine mistake/problem with paypal.

boogiewoogie · 06/11/2011 22:53

Well, okay. Now that I'm back to £0 received. Should I hit "Request Money" from Paypal? Or should I just go to bed?

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 06/11/2011 22:55

go to bed. you have emailed the buyer, she should contact you tomorrow.

Honeydragon · 06/11/2011 23:03

Fergoose ... the App is crap. I've had someone email me saying I hadn't added postage to the invoice, then another 20 minutes later saying they had logged on their pc and it was there Confused

When it happened to me and I payed on the app it showed the amount with postage and I paid. Ebay confirmed this payment. Only after the seller contacted me, and I checked my Paypal account could I see the postage hadn't been paid.

It makes me Angry, eBay shouldn't have glitches like this. Not when so many scammers are rife that they can't protect people from in the first place.

dizzyday07 · 06/11/2011 23:28

I had a buyer buy 2 items from me. I received a payment for each (seperately) and both were without postage!

I contacted the buyer who confirmed she'd paid via her phone.

I refunded and she paid on the combined invoice from her PC the next day

boogiewoogie · 15/11/2011 22:26

I've only had one response from the buyer so far telling me that she's happy to pay the right amount once she receives confirmation of cancelled payment. I thought Paypal sends a confirmation straight away if you have a refund?

Anyway, on My Ebay, it shows that the payment has been refunded. I daren't send her another email yet given that I've sent her a couple already at the start of this saga. How long should I give her to pay again before I give up and suggest cancelling the transaction?

OP posts:
dizzyday07 · 16/11/2011 00:32

If she has paid from her bank account (as opposed from Paypal balance) the refund will go back to her bank - and that can take 7-10 days I think!

saoirse86 · 16/11/2011 10:34

BertieBotts paypal fees are 20p + 1.4-3.4% depending on the transaction, but I think it's normally 3.4% for eBay. So there would be an extra charge for 2 transactions rather than 1 transaction.

The buyer will be able to see the transaction has been refunded. She will have an email saying so and will be able to log in to paypal to see the refund. When I've been refunded in the past I'm sure it's just gone onto my paypal balance rather than into my bank account. Isn't that how it normally works? If it is she will have it available straight away.

This app thing is really annoying, I didn't know about that.

I had a buyer last week choose free P&P but I think she was pulling a fast one as she'd tried to send me a cheque and wanted my address despite me saying I only accept paypal or cash. Then when I sent her an invoice for postage (couldn't be bothered refunding) she didn't pay the invoice and just sent what she thought postage should be! Shock Angry
