Same sex - home insemination??

Hello MN. NC due to topic.

Me and my wife, both female have decided the time is right for a baby. We have an amazing donor on standby. We are aiming for January. He lives 40 minutes away from us. So if my wife is due to ovulate on the weekend we were going to get a local hotel for the night. If it's a week day, we are going to travel back home with the sperm (due to work the day after), to then self inseminate once home.
Is anyone with me on this? Or have any tips/advice/experience?
I have read many threads on here, but most seem to have sperm readily available (partners/husbands)
Any help would be much appreciated!

To be honest I don't think one shot a month would be enough. You'd have to be perfectly accurate with ovulation. I'd say you need to do it once a day in the lead up to ovulation and the day after to give yourself the best shot

If it was a weekday we would travel there and back more than once. If a weekend we would get donations over the weekend we are staying

I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant with a donor.

Myself and my wife tried for 18 months with a donor who lived nearby, we had him coming to the house every night during my whole ovulation period, sometimes 4-5 nights. Anyway after 18 months we were so disheartened we decided to just spend sometime the two of us and forget about trying for a while.

Fast forward a year and we searched for another donor and got talking to one(who we had spoke to years ago but couldn’t help at the time as he was assisting someone else) he was free and willing and as were we.

Like we had done before he agreed to come over for the full of my ovulation period in July, randomly I took an ovulation stick a few days before my ovulation period was even meant to start and it was a smiley face, panicked and called him and he came and donated that night. Once and I fell pregnant straight away.

So yes it can happen. If I can help anymore let me know.

I got pregnant on my first ever donor insemination so it is possible. The only thing I'd worry about in your situation is the 40 minute journey which seems a long time for the sperm to survive. I was told wait 10 mins but not much longer as the sperm start to die (at/around room temperature). Would he be able to come to yours once a month? Or you wouldn't be the first to do the insemination on the back seat of a car...

Hi @DallyD

How are you getting in with this?

I wanted to share some of my experience in case it’s helpful. I’ve been TTC with a donor for 5 cycles and am in a same sex relationship.

For the first 4 cycles my donor was very confident that 1/cycle was enough. I found it quite stressful and in retrospect I think the timings were off. It’s only since I started properly charting temps and OPKs as well monitoring CM this month that I’ve actually seen I ovulate earlier than I thought.

I was half heartedly monitoring these things before and mainly using the OPKs. But now I’ve realised I ovulate on the day my OPK is half as dark as the control line

This cycle he has donated twice which was a huge weight off my mind.

So in summary, my advice would be get 2 Inseminations per cycle if you can (way less stressful) and work out when you ovulate using whatever method you finds works best for you.

Good luck OP.

Myself and female partner both conceived in similar way, think it took her 4 cycles and me 3 cycles. We were lucky to have a friend as a donor and we generally only did one insemination a month, using pee sticks to predict ovulation. There might have been the odd time we managed more than once a month.

Hang in there!

Hello everyone! Thank you so much for your replies! I've had a crazy couple of weeks so not been very active. Thank you for all your advice and tips I have taken these on board. We are members on several donor Facebook groups to get as much info as we can. We have been tracking ovulation religiously for months with apps and the pee sticks! Since my last post our donor has offered to travel to us, which takes off most of the pressure we were feeling! He has offered to visit as much as we need during our peak, so just wanted other peoples opinions/experiences?

Thank you all again

I am also trying home insemination , any tips ? did you get a BFP?

DallyD · 06/03/2021 08:17

Hi @annmaria11487. Yes we got a BFP on first attempt with 2 donations, 1 at peak and 1 the morning after. We tested at 11dpo and 13dpo with clearblue early tests. We have been tracking ovulation religiously since last summer. We ovulate around cd17 so from cd11 we tested once everyday, once the tests got darker we tested every couple of hours.
On donation day we kept our donor in the loop every couple of hours. He turned up, did his business and left. We left a towel and pot out for him in the bathroom. Once he left I kept the pot under my armpit. We then used a calpol style syringe to suck it up. We held the pot at 45 degrees so that the syringe never touched the sides or bottom. We then wrapped it in tissue and put back under armpit until my wife was ready (people suggest an orgasm on donation). I then had a feel for her cervix, put the syringe in, pulled it back maybe half an inch and released it slowly. We left the syringe in to act as a plug for 10 minutes, and laid down with hips up with a pillow for about 50 minutes. When we got up we expected some leakage but there was none visable, although this is normal if so. She didnt go to the toilet for a couple of hours. We repeated the next morning about 15 hours after.
We are 6 weeks tomorrow Grin miracles do happen, good luck!

@DallyD thanks for sharing your story, I hope the pregnancy is going well.

Slightly different position to you but I'm going to try your method as I'm not sure dh's is going the distance.

What's the reason you didn't let the syringe touch the sides of the pot just out of curiosity?

Thank you!

DallyD · 03/04/2021 16:24

Hi @mummysharkk. Unfortunately we are back for a scan on the 6th April due to no heartbeat being found. This will be our 4th scan now, 2 private and 2 nhs. We should be 8 week 1 day then.
I read online that touching the sides/bottom of the pot can kill and crush sperm, between the edge of the syringe and side of pot. Not sure how correct this is but I wasn't taking any chances!
Good luck! Keep me posted!
