Conception via Sperm Donor

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the right place to put this but hopefully someone will help.

I am 37 and single and starting to think about the road of conceiving via sperm donor. I wanted the 'husband and kids' thing when I was younger however life didn't pan out like that and haven't met anyone even close to go down that road with. I don't think I am very good at relationships.

In recent years I have been resolutely against having children although I guess having one as a single person didn't seem like an option to me at all.

Something in me is starting to change however and thoughts have started entering my head about maybe regretting not being a mum and all that entails. I don't have a good relationship with my own mother so that's always blighted it.

I literally have no clue about how much it costs, how to go about it (I'm very much in the entertaining it in my head stage, nothing else), is there a way can I check to see if my eggs are even viable? I understand at 37 I'm leaving it quite late.

Basically, is there anyone else in my situation and age who has done this alone and could share their experience/knowledge? Thanks.

Hi there,

I’m 35 and single and have started looking into IUI with the plan to proceed with a sperm donor next year. I’d love to hear any advice from anyone who has been through the process or is planning to do it? How do you finally decide on the month you are going to stop thinking/researching/dwelling and just take the plunge? I’m at the stage of also really checking finances that I’ll be able to afford the maternity period. Does anyone have any insight into what benefits are available for single mothers? I’m in a well paid job and know I can afford it but just want to be fully in the know about everything financial - I’ve not told my dad yet and I know that’s going to be his main concern so what to be able to answer all his questions. A long message, but any advice anyone can share with me would be much appreciated.

@Shez35 hi there and a Merry Christmas. I set myself a time limit (of a certain birthday around 2 years away) and if I hadn't met anyone by then decided I'd go for it with a sperm donor. I sort of wanted a period to adjust to my future plans. It then took me ages (almost 2 years) to stay pregnant (I had a lot of miscarriages) but I'm currently 30 weeks.

I don't really know about the single mum benefits. I hadn't ever really considered that because I've also got a good job in finance. Before you speak to your dad you should have an idea of whether you're going to do IUI or IVF and how much the whole process is likely to cost you and then look at the maternity pay and benefits offered by your employer.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have. Good luck.
