NHS Email- access from abroad

BluebelllsRosesDaffodills · 18/06/2024 22:52

Hi,
I’m currently on holiday abroad for 3 weeks, and had hoped to be able to keep an eye on emails from work during this time.

However, although I’ve been able to get onto some of the NHS systems like ESR and GRS, it won’t let me access my NHS email account due to location.

Anyone know if there is any way around this please?

thanks

This is bizarre. I always login abroad. On my phone, I never take a laptop.

Luminousalumnus · 18/06/2024 22:55

Can't advise though, it just works for me!

LadyOfACertainAge · 18/06/2024 22:55

It will be trust dependant. Ours will lock you out of the system if you try to access it outside of the UK without prior agreement. It’s to prevent hacking apparently, but I’m not sure who would be in the least bit interested in my work emails!

Star81 · 18/06/2024 22:56

Maybe try using a VPN ?

AlisonWonderbra · 18/06/2024 22:57

I was able to access ESR, Employee Online, and NHS mail from Tenerife in April.

Microsoft has added conditional access which can restrict access for a number of reasons, such as blocking countries. It's likely to be this and tougher security measures due to the recent breach.

Regrettably access to work systems will go "backwards" as it's the only way to properly secure systems. If it's conditional access by country then the VPN will not work.

Maybe I’ll try to email IT support desk to see what they advise

Thanks everyone

Does anyone have the email address for the IT service desk?

I assume it’s the same for all the NHS

I have found a workaround. Make sure your wifi is switched off. Access your emails on your phone / outlook using roaming mobile signal. You will have to use the Microsoft authentication too but it works if WiFi switched off.

OP is this a scam or a joke?
One IT helpdesk for the whole NHS lol

No

But everyone in the NHS seems to have the same email, same ESR system etc

obviously, there will be more then one person working at IT help desk

Are you tethered to/on a phone or through a hotel wifi?
Not NHS but government and works if on a phone connection but not through wifi.

larkstar · 18/06/2024 23:36

My DD has been travelling all over the world (Thailand, India, Peru, NZ, Japan, etc) in the last 2 years in blocks of 3-4 months. She uses my NordVPN login to get access to her NHS emails, apply for jobs etc. I paid about £70 for 3 years the last time - just select a UK server to connect to using the VPN software on your phone, iPad, laptop and then you can log in no problem.

I was trying through hotel wifi

Tried the suggested idea of using mobile data, but it’s so expensive!

Im with Tesco Mobile

I increased my safety buffer to £100, and it’s telling me it’s used it all just by googling a few pages! 🤬😭

I knew data abroad was expensive, but WTF? Surely not that much!!

You'll need to contact the IT service desk for your ICB / Trust / place of work.

Have a look on your intranet or ask a colleague

Sorry to jump on your thread OP but do you mind me asking if you can access patients details on your personal device?

I was talking to a nurse this week who said she’d read my blood test results while she was in bed having a lie in. I was surprised they can access that sort of information from home? How can all these personal devices be secure in terms of holding patient data?

Luminousalumnus · 19/06/2024 00:55

We take our devices home. Or I do because I don't have an office. But yes, once set up I can access notes on work or personal laptop and phone.

Luminousalumnus · 19/06/2024 01:00

So patient details are as safe as anything else on my phone. Another person would need to have my fingerprint, then know my email address and password which I seem to be made to change every month or so.
