Any consultants who retrained in another speciality or GP?

Hello! Would really appreciate some input. I'm a consultant in cardiology working part time right now as a locum. I qualified and worked outside of UK and moved here as DH is British. There's an alternative pathway (CESR) for doctors outside UK to become consultants here but it is extensive and very unlikely I could have it complete unless I go back to full time work and on calls.

I have a 2 year old who is in nursery three days a week and we have no family here for support. Full time work may not be an option right now.

I'm thinking of retraining in another speciality which is less demanding or GP with more flexible hours. I have MD and MRCP and general medical training but do not know if this would be considered when I apply.

Anybody else retrained in another speciality/GP ? What was your experience like? Anyone in a similar position?

Not me but I know a consultant anaesthetist who retrained as a GP - he had to start right from the beginning again - so ST1 in GP onwards. I changed from oncology to GP as a staff grade but this was back in 2006

  • they did take my A&E rotation into account but still had to do 2.5 years rather than 3 (although I had mat leave in the middle so was pretty long anyway).

I left hospital medicine as an SAS dr to do GP training but didn't enjoy it much - the hospital jobs were fine but the GP part was a combination of dull yet demanding and stressful in a different way. I didn't feel any inspiration. I went back to hospital practice.
