Why do mumsnetters dislike hcps so much

Just on a thread about hcps being disturbed on lunch and the contempt for hcps is apparent. Why do you think that’s so? Some mns really seem to hate us.

I've seen plenty of hate for Health Visitors - people suggesting they're a bunch of clueless busybody do gooders who should just butt out, rather than highly trained professionals who have a very serious responsibility. I know there are some useless ones out there (I've met a few) but some posters seem to object to the profession even existing

I've wondered about the HV hatred for a while. I wonder if it's because they don't advocate the "your bubz your rulez" and rather recommend following guidelines ? And whether some people don't like being told (or it being inferred) that their grandmothers advice to put baby rice into the bottle from 8 weeks is no longer best practice?

I don't think anyone hates HCPs, but when one is awful to you, it's more than likely when you're at your lowest ebb anyway and it stings and you remember it.

I'm not a hcp, I'm the root of all evil - a nhs manager . I do see a lot of anti hcp posting tbh. Specially on the threads about elderly parents where nothing coming out a hcp's mouth is ever 'right'

MNers hate HVs because they don't fall over in shock and die if someone dares to bottle feed and doesn't use a sling.

I think communication is at the root of it, tbh. I am a HCP, but my father and I were both treated with utter disregard by doctors when my mother was an inpatient in hospital last week, and spent a cumulative 14 hours simply waiting to speak to a doctor, over a period of three days. We only eventually managed to speak to a doctor when I asked to speak to Matron on the third day, after waiting 4 hours to speak to a doctor, knowing that nurses had gone into the room where the doctor was more than three times to remind him that relatives were waiting to speak to him, and we were actually sat at the nurses' station, 5 feet from the door.

That was dreadful communication on the part of the medical staff. At the hospital that I work in.

The HVs , midwives and physios that I had with my first two children were unbelievable. Very unprofessional and unhelpful. I came to MN then as a way of getting help with all sorts of things. The HVs I've had with dc3 have been amazing (we moved). I couldn't have had more intelligent and informed hcps.

Isn't it just that when people don't get good support irl they don't need to ask for help on Internet forums?

I think its just that people are more vocal about the bad ones because as a pp says it comes at a time when you are especially vunerable.

Honestly, I think HCP on here fall into the same category as teachers and social workers in that anyone who had one bad experience suddenly thinks they are a bloody expert on a whole sector, anyone who wants to raise a query should be fuming and anyone who went to school/did guides first aid badge/has the internet is obviously vastly more qualified than the professionals.

Some HCP are rubbish, just like in any job. Bit on MN there's a cohort of people who seem to have silly agendas with front line public sector workers.

Just remember, it's always the vocal minority who stand out. Most will think positive things and are more than reasonable/understanding.

I was disgusted by some of the attitudes on that thread, agedknees - the sense of entitlement and resentment towards HCPs was clear to see. I was unpleasantly surprised to see those attitudes.

This year My family have needed the NHS a ridiculous amount of times.. maternity triage, birth, a and e for my grandparent and sadly palliative Care, paediatric a and e for my baby daughter with suspected meningitis. At all times, when there were emergencies for family members, we were clearly prioritised and looked after with so much respect and care. The rest of the time, yes things were slower understandably but again I felt reassured we were in safe hands:

I know quite a few HVs and I had a fab one myself. I don't get the hatred. They have a tough job and they are doing their best to help the families, who often throw it back in their faces. I did have one useless one but that doesn't rule out the profession as a whole and in general I think their existence is a very good thing.

If you think HVs are hated, try looking at the threads about CAMHS! We are stupid, lazy, feckless and incapable.

If you listen to a significant proportion of MNetters midwives are sadistic pain relief denying witches. I choose to believe that as pp’s have said it’s because you tend to talk about that bad experiences and not that the majority of people think we’re she devils. 🤞🏻

Every HV I’ve had has been the opposite! One told me that baby lead weaning was a ‘new fangled fad’, that I should start with purées at 5 months, and that I should be sleep training at 3 months. Another said I should be feeding on a 4 4 hourly schedule from birth (I was EBF). And a third asked why I was keeping the baby downstairs with us in the evenings when I should be putting her to bed at 7pm every night in a dark, quiet room (she was 2 weeks old).

I think it's often about expectation which may or may not be realistic. Hcp are experts but patients are not and often left confused but what is going on - due to poor communication / administration. I have had 3 children and I still don't understand the purpose of the health visitor. I have seen them maybe be once each time and took my first to their clinic a bit but at no point did anyone explain to me the hv role / when I would consult them rather than a gp / what they could and couldn't help with.

Not just CAMHS Zebra! Apparently most people who work in MH are "fucking useless". And my friends wonder why I tell strangers I work in IT.....

If I think about the nhs staff who looked after me throughout my pregnancy, birth and recovery I tear up with gratitude. They’re the people I think about when I’m getting cynical about the human race, and they’re responsible for not only saving our lives but also my sanity. Not one of them seemed to think they’d done anything out of the ordinary despite me feeling they went well beyond the call of duty in their warmth and compassion towards us.

So I dunno why people are against HCPs on here. Maybe they’ve been unlucky as previously suggested. Also I don’t always share because I get gushy and don’t want to seem smug when people are talking about their bad experiences.

The thing to bear in mind is that HCPs are the face of a crumbling institution and it's easier to get angry with the people who are delivering a questionable service than consider the complexities of the reasons why it's crumbling.

Especially if a person is in a state of distress.

I am an HCP by background (do a different but connected job now), but I can totally understand the frustrations with CAMHS and mental health services. I can also understand the frustration with services which support older people.

The bottom line is that as HCPCs the reason we went into our jobs was to support people in their most difficult times (patients and carers / families), but we are forced to work in a system which dehumanises people and this becomes the norm. Sadly, this approach has an impact on people's lives, so to expect them to be accepting of or grateful for poor quality care is naive.

Came into this board about to post this very question (although appreciate the thread is old). Can’t remember ever seeing a nice thread about GPs, we are mostly felt to be useless at best, and dangerous/negligent at worst. So depressing 🙁

I know Paddington- l don't ever tell anyone l am a social worker, my colleagues in children and families teams get abuse and vitriol for daring to make contact and getting involved at all 'interfering, nosy busybodies' is a nicer term, and for those of us that work with older people the family's seem to seek daily contact and a full take over of responsibility for everything!
