The guilt of meeting someone else

I was with my ex husband for 11 years (married for 2) moved into our forever home, got married, have an 8yr old dog. Tried for children for about a year and it never happened which added a huge strain to the relationship. In the end the relationship broke down and I left the home and moved into a rented house. During that time I’ve met a new partner, I’ve recently moved in with him. But my ex husband is very much still in my life, we still share our dog and he tells me he’s happy and moved on and then says he’s sad and loves me and it leaves me every time feeling and unbelievable sadness. And still I question whether I was right to leave the relationship. 13 months on since moving out I’m still as sad as the day I moved out. I have days where I’m happy but it hits me with sadness and I just want to be able to move on. But I always wonder whether it was the right thing. Surely the pain should be healing by now? Any advice please!

Are you sad for you, or sad for him? I think thats what you need to unpick in your head. I left my DH 12 years ago now and although we are great friends, I know he still feels sadness about it, and in turn that makes me feel sad and guilty. But for me, I know I did the right thing, but I do feel bad for him. Maybe it's the same for you. You obviously left for a reason, so just remind yourself of that and just accept that to feel sadness sometimes is ok no matter how much time has passed.
