I haven't posted in here for a really long time but honestly, I feel so lost, stunned, overwhelmed, sick to my stomach, can't even find the words to fully describe the situation we are in. I'm a single parent of a 9yo, have been living with my parents for the past two years. He came clean 2 days ago about his cheating, with this woman who's my sister's age ffs. My mom kicked him out. I still can't get my head around it, how on earth am I supposed to explain this situation to my kid?

Good on your mum for not tolerating that shit

BatshitIsTheExplanation · 13/10/2026 21:12

Given your actual Q, I probably wouldn't say anything beyond grandad "staying somewhere else tonight" until there's a future plan.

I'm so sorry. I've known 70 year olds who cheated. Just be good to your mum she must have had a terrible shock.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 13/10/2026 21:15

This must be a huge shock but your Mum has done exactly the right thing.
just say grandad isn’t here atm and let things just progress naturally.

Imicola · 13/10/2026 21:17

Ah yeah, my dad did the same in his 70s - what a shock. He moved out, then thought he wanted to stay, but it didn't work so my mum asked for a divorce. Stay strong for your mum, i think the hardest was living on her own and needing to learn how to take care of everything he had previously done, like DIY, insurance etc. It's hard, but it will get easier.

Edit to add, we told my daughter that they didn't get on anymore, sometimes that happens, so now they live separately and aren't married. She's never really asked many questions.

canwegonow · 13/10/2026 21:18

She asked about him today and I lied to her, said he's away for work 😔 I hate lying to her. I'm 100% with my mum on this, I want her to be happy, she doesn't deserve this

Thank you all for your kind words. Good thing he wasn't doing anything useful in this house...we can take the trash out by ourselves !

2years ago was when I left my EX, we used the we don't get along anymore speech at the time, but he's still in her life. My dad was like a safe male figure for my LO, someone she could trust and who would spoil her! I'm so scared of the shock this news will give her
