Considering separation because of debt in my name

I’ve been married for 9 years and my husband is perfect in every way apart from for the last 2 years he has got us in loads of debt (mainly in my name) and is not paying it back, we have debt letters daily and have bailiffs at the door every couple of months
I feel completely helpless I try to talk to him about it but he’s so delusional he just thinks he can get away with not paying things
I can’t take it anymore and feel it’s best for us to separate and me be on my own to get my finances back in order, I love him so much but I don’t think this situation will ever end unless I leave has anyone been in a similar situation? I’d love some advice

Can I ask why the debt is in your name? Has he been applying for loans / credit fraudulently? If so you will need legal advice.
I agree that if he isn’t prepared to get help, or even discuss the situation, you need to protect yourself.

Why on earth is the debt in your name? You may love him not he doesn’t feel the same, he’s exploiting you.

What is the best for ? General household spend or things he’s purchased without your knowledge etc why is it in your name ?

Yes he’s applied for credit cards and store accounts in my name but I have no proof of that so don’t know where I would stand

He just applied for credit cards and store accounts in my name without my knowledge and it spiralled from there

That is fraud. Report it to the Police.

OriginalSkang · 01/10/2026 10:51

You need to report it to the police and get legal advice. There is literally no other sensible course of action

And divorce, obviously

LetMeGoogleThat · 01/10/2026 10:56

Did you marry my EXH? If he's not paying it off, on top of fraud, please check that nothing has been registered against your house too. unfortunately, I didn't and the £50k I thought I would get when I LTB wasn't there for me and kids!

Please leave him, is he gambling? Or general expenditures?

My mums ex partner left her in loads of debt the same way, took out credit cards forged her signature etc, she left him 10 years ago and has just stopped paying back his debt now as she couldn’t prove it wasn’t her despite it been fraud! Turned out he wasn’t even paying basic bills, report to the police and divorce him
