My husband and I have finally decided to separate after many years of talking about it. I’m a full time carer to our two autistic children (they don’t attend school). He works full time.
We are both really keen to try and keep our current home for the kids until they much older. We have been considering remortgaging to release some equity to buy a small second home nearby for my husband and for me to stay in the current home with the kids.
We’re thinking of buying it jointly, so that all assets are still jointly owned, as we don’t have the capacity to apply for divorce or work out the finances just yet. We plan to do this in a couple of years. We will then informally decide how to split my husband’s income so we can try and live independently of each other.
is this wildly unrealistic? Or a bad idea for other reasons? Neither of us have the mental space right now to work out divorce/a clean break option. And there are no rentals nearby (we live very rurally). We just need a solution for the next couple of years that allows us to live separately, but for him to be close enough to see the kids regularly without too much travel for them.
Any insight from those who have been through this process would be very welcome. thanks
