When did you stop wearing your rings after separation or divorce?

In a few days'.time I will be at the end of the 20 week initial cooling off period, and will apply for the conditional order. My ex is dragging his feet over mediation so I expect it will take longer than six weeks and one day afterwards to get the financial order sorted out... but I can deal with that.

My question is for anyone who has been through divorce, when did you stop wearing your wedding/engagement ring and if you changed your name back, when did you do that? Any what were your reasons for your choice?

Where decided it was over, I took my rings did, so it was actually prior to the physical split, but after we’d had the conversation.
Name change was a bit later, a few months maybe.
Good luck, I know how hard this stage is. It will get better.

I took my rings off when it was clear it was definitely over & I was telling people. This was about 6 weeks after he’d moved out & long before divorce.

I haven’t changed my name & I’m not sure if that’s the right decision as the OW is now the new Mrs ItsAllSoUnfair. I decided I wanted the same surname as my children & after all the divorce hassle I couldn’t be bothered with all the name changing hassle. It has had the benefit that I don’t have any problems taking the children abroad for example. I’ve never needed a letter from my ex (although I’ve read on here you should - he would provide one it’s just not something I’d ever thought about).

I do find it hard to know whether to use Mrs or Ms. I do typically use Mrs but when I book a hotel with my fella I feel it looks like we are having an affair as I’m a Mrs but we have a different surname.

At some point when the kids are older and maybe they are married so have their own families then I will change my name but I’m not sure what to. I know it would be logical to change back to my maiden name but that would feel like a backward step & I don’t feel like that person anymore. Some of the people I’m closest to in my family don’t have that surname either. Ideally it would be a significant other’s surname but I’m very wary of getting married again.

As soon as I found out about his affair. No one commented though. I've not changed my name (probably due to laziness but I'd also had it for so long and it's the same as my children's) but do wonder sometimes as there is another Mrs Whodrankmytea now.

Ending my marriage coincided with major surgery, so I took the rings off to go into hospital and never put them back on. Ex noticed about three months later.

Good luck OP. You’ll get there.

Rings off after he kicked the shit out of me.

Never changed name as wanted same name as DC and cba.

Pinkmagic1 · 30/07/2026 06:52

I took my rings off a couple of weeks after I told him we were over. As for my name, I always kept my maiden name so it wasn't an issue and something I was was glad I had made the decision to do. I wouldn't have wanted to be stuck with his name after and I don't really get the argument about having the same name to your children. It is a very British thing I think.

Removed my ring the day I left him. Changed my name 6weeks later by deed poll.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/07/2026 07:18

As soon as my ex left the house.

I never changed my name so nothing to change back. I took my rings off some years later (4/5) when my fingers got bigger during menopause. Before that I kept wearing them because they were pretty.

SensetheTone · 30/07/2026 07:24

Rings came off the day I found out about his affair. I haven’t changed my name as I prefer my married name to my maiden name and want to keep the same name as my children. This could potentially be a bit odd if he ends up marrying OW since she has the same first name as me (ex is nothing if not unoriginal) but that would be her issue not mine.

Myblueclematis · 30/07/2026 07:29

I stopped wearing my ring(s) once we split up and moved out of the house. I later sold them with some other old jewellery about five years ago.

I changed my name a couple of years later and went back to previous name, I did this legally.

susiedaisy1912 · 30/07/2026 07:30

Before the actual divorce and then I sold them in a Pawn shop as soon as the divorce was officially done

Kipperz · 30/07/2026 08:56

Broke off the engagement a year before we officially split. He was an abusive arsehole for a long time.

OriginalSkang · 30/07/2026 08:59

The day I found he'd been sleeping with sex workers

I can't imagine many people keep wearing their ring past the day they separate!

Pinkpinkdoor · 30/07/2026 20:04

I took mine off months before we separated. It was after he had been a bastard yet again and I felt like I could take no more. Those rings felt like I was wearing a heavy chain. I’m planning to sell them as soon as we’re divorced. I’ve kept my double barrelled surname only for work
