Suddenly & unexpectedly separated. DH was very handy but there are unfinished projects around. How do I find someone to finish them off?!!

For example he started doing up DD10 bedroom in early January. It’s still a half completed project. Involving Ikea bits n bobs and some shelving.

boxes of bits are trip hazards all over my house and poor girl cannot use her bed as it’s covered with things that should go on the shelves when they go up!!!

where do you find a handy person to come round to complete those jobs, without being robbed?!

Is OP also incapable of clearing stuff off her daughter’s bed so she has somewhere to sleep?

Wow, your posts are really unkind.

the OP is going through a separation and trying to get back on her feet.

if you’re so good at DIY why not give her some tips instead of catty comments? So bitchy.

@mummybearSW19
Sounds like a stressful situation, I am sure that a handy type person via Facebook or local ads/personal recommendation can help get some of this sorted. We’ve had to have lots of diy done in the house and most of the people we have used have been excellent. Can’t recommend as we are in the Midlands.

Some previous posters have come across (perhaps unintentionally) as sarcastic or unhelpful.
Look after yourself - the sudden ending of a relationship is an often a big shock and adjustment and if there are practicalities to sort alongside looking after your children, sounds like a lot. Hoping you have some good friends/family to also support.

@franklymydearscarlett - well said.

ive seen this advertised on the tube. Have you used it?

OP I have only used it when paired with IKEA as they partner with them as others have said and for that it was very good. I expect it might be expensive for standalone tasks but you can find out.

otherwise I have a handy man who I think I found on the next door app, although you do have to be careful on there. He charges £35 an hour, brings his own tools and doesn’t charge for a whole day and he’s lovely so good people do exist.

If you’re expecting SS then clear DD’s bed as a matter of urgency. They will expect her to have somewhere to sleep. Clear all the things and pop them away in a cupboard. Stack any waiting shelves neatly at the sides. Anything else won’t matter

NerrSnerr · 18/03/2026 07:25

Not sure why people have been such an arse to the OP, acting superior about doing it herself. She’s clearly going through a really hard time and I imagine just wants to get stuff sorted with minimal stress while focusing on her children and getting her life on track.

If there’s a local FB page you can also try on there, in our area there are a lot of people wanting to do smaller jobs

Mum2Fergus · 18/03/2026 14:12

Best thing to do OP is prioritise the work that needs doing. Then take it one baby step at a time. If you’re not confident building furniture just put it out the way until you are either able to tackle it or you get someone onboard to support you.

Decor for shelving etc again can just all be boxed away and dealt with another time. Prioritise safety first off, then look at cleaning and decluttering when you’re up to it.

Thanks for the kind words

my DD has 2 beds in her room. However her favourite bed is the one covered in stuff.

the ikea boxes are heavy and the main one is currently a trip hazard in my room.

Will take a look at this problem at the end of the Easter break. In the meantime there is a lot to do. Incl finding a lawyer

Search for "landlords property maintenance service" in your area. These are umbrella companies that themselves employ registered plumbers, boiler servicers, electricians, carpenters etc. Their core audience is buy-to-let landlords who want one number they can call to deal with any issue with a property, on a quick turn-around - but they usually accept private individuals who want stuff done in their own house too, a job is a job.

By way of an update…. On the Saturday morning of the May bank Hol weekend I went onto Task Rabbit. Found a man to come that afternoon. For £147 he sorted out what could be done.

hurrah.

she is now back using her double bed. Bunk bed is back to being a dumping ground for teddies and dolls!!!DD is very happy to have her room back and I am ecstatic to have my room back free of trip hazards too!

next task …… find knobs / handles she likes for drawers !!

Glad you got that sorted. I bet it felt really good to be able to pay someone to actually finish a job, instead of tripping over half done projects and tripping and having to be grateful for a handy dh.

Onwards and upwards @mummybearSW19

Yes. @JillThePlantKilleryou are spot on with that observation!!

feels amazing 🤩

slowly but surely ticking off jobs…… chucking stuff out, sending stuff to the tip, listing on vinted, securing a new job…… filing for divorce! It’s all go round here. 🐝

when I get paid next I am purchasing packing boxes and my cleaner has offered to pack up all his stuff and then we will take it to a storage unit for him to pick up from.

and after that I plan to find someone to sort out the garden ready for some sunshine!!!

i am excited by both of these plans. Onwards and upwards
