Getting rid of Ex’s Junk

SilverLinings123 · 09/03/2026 21:14

Been separated for a while now, ex has taken quite a bit of their junk to their place but there’s still quite a lot still at mine after several months and quite frankly I just want to get rid of it. Previous heavy hints for them to sort it out have been met with stonewalling. Since our property is a marital asset part of me thinks they still have a right to store their stuff here (which they also probably think) so perhaps I’m stuck with it for the foreseeable. What are other peoples experiences?

Put it all in boxes.. mention your boxing it up and I guarantee you he’ll be round quick sharp to get it as he won’t want you touching his ‘stuff’

I actually got something from his solicitor "warning" me that if anything if his was stolen or damaged, I would be liable for it. So if anyone tells you to simply tell him to remove it my a certain date or you will bin it, just be careful.
Luckily, I have a garage that I could just leave everything of his in until it was all sorted.

Since it is his property he has a right to store stuff there. But even if he didn’t own half the property you can’t just get rid of the stuff he left. There is a legal process to follow, it’s called involuntary bailee.

pack it up and put it in a spare room. Make a list of the items and give it to him. There really is any point in riling each other up any more than you have to or at all. No matter what key board warriors tell you. It will just make for a bitter and expensive divorce.

Did anyone else read the thread title, and just for a moment think the OP was suggesting castration?
