Kids still living at home unsupported by dad

I’m divorced of 3 years, “kids” 21 & 23 years living with me still. Daddy dearest absolved financial responsibility, as over 18 when financial settlement agreed.
I’m still supporting both financially, though they pay a nominal fee for “ housekeeping”
Any advice about how to ease through the door towards independence, before the rod I have made becomes a more leaden weight?

They are adults and you need to charge them more rent, at the very least to cover their food, their share of bills. An adult parent shouldn’t be paying towards adults. If they aren’t earning much, they could get a second job. They need to be paying their way at that age; not having an adult parent send maintenance for them.

I left home at 18 and I’ve never received a penny from my parents since then. I know it must be a really difficult adjustment for you but their dad doesn’t owe you any sort of financial compensation for the decision that you’ve made to house and cater to the children when they are way into adulthood.
