Separation and protecting myself financially

Hi . My husband wants us to separate as he doesn’t feel the same anymore . I think he has someone waiting in wings but that’s another story . There is a huge difference in our earnings ( I was a SAHM for 20 years until a few years ago ) I now work PT and I wondered how I can protect myself financially when he moves out and while I decide when to start divorce proceedings etc . He said he will support me financially as he does currently but should I get this in writing in some way . Had a chat to a solicitor who said separation agreements are not legally binding and not worth doing . How have others protected themselves as I can’t afford the mortgage , bills etc on my salary ( I will obviously be increasing my hours but this still would not cover it ) .
Any advice please ?

Start divorce proceedings and process for financial settlement. That’s really the only way.

do you know your assets ? Incomes? You should if possible try to agree as much as possible between you.

How old is your husband?

The reason I ask is that if he has a pension you are entitled to half of the value. If he "draws" his pension you won't be entitled to it (apart from any savings he has from it).

Op is not entitled to half his pension

op is entitled to ensure all assets are included in the pot for division and that she gets a fair share. A fair share could be half or more or less than half .
