i’m so worried tonight that seperating isn’t the right thing as my little boy (4 in april) has really started missing daddy and asking why he isn’t here

his daddy did some pretty awful things to mummy (lied about drinking constantly, messaged brothels/women from work etc and was very emotionally manipulative) so i can’t be in a relationship with this man

but i just need reassurance that he’ll be okay in time as i’m just so worried i’m going to mentally scar him from this

Give him lots of love and cuddles and a calm routine and explain what has happened in a child appropriate way. If there is ongoing contact with your ex then try to agree guidelines. Eg not slating the other and how new relationships should be presented
As staying with the ex was unbearable you really have no choice. Going back to him would be madness and you would only be in the same position further down the line which would be much more damaging than acting now. Wishing you well

He is 4, still very young and he will be fine. Of course he is noticing changes so he needs reassurance and love and a handhold whilst he adjusts to new way of life.

He will be fine. He just needs time to adjust.
