Happy New Year My Friend
Approaching New Year what do we see
How will next year be for you and for me
For me this year has opened my eyes
I am shocked and in horror at human despise
What do we see when we look at our past
What do we see in our present going fast
What do we see when looking ahead
Are we filled with hope or unfortunate dread
What have we achieved for ourselves and for others
Have we regrets for ourselves and our brothers
Ask ourselves are we selfish and self serving
Or are we selfless and so deserving
Ask ourselves are we proud of our actions
Are we kind in our own interactions
Look deep and ask,
Do we harbour guilt of our past and our actions
Or are we proud of most interactions
Ask ourselves are we destructive and spiteful,
Or are we kind, selfless and insightful
Look deep and ask,
Do we truly care about the destruction we leave
We all have a kindness I truly believe
Look deep and consider,
Perhaps we are not those who put ourselves first
Perhaps we are those that have a strong thirst
To spend our lives building up others
Having the backs of all of our brothers
Perhaps we are those that have made a difference
Not the types who are full of indifference
Perhaps we have touched those we don’t know
Perhaps we’ve saved lives while on the go
One look or one word or any action
Can result in a simple kind human interaction
Or perhaps we have destroyed a fellow being
Not caring, not stopping or even seeing
Look deep my friend and please do see
We all have an ego even you and me
It’s large and it’s brash and it always needs fed
When exposed believe me it causes dread
The ego’s power makes the highest demands
As it grows and grows it will make it’s commands
To control it will take the strongest of mind
Words and actions which to others are kind
It truly takes over and will cause you to boast
It envies others and wants better than most
If you feed it then you will find it will grow
And as this happens others will go
If you are weak and succumb what you will find
Is a human left with a tortured mind
We may not know it and we may not care
But I ask you brother to truly dare
To take a deep look and what you will see
Is that once on your death bed you will be
A mere human being that can only now see
Your actions matter because time is not free
And what do we see as we look hard and deep
The difference we made for others to keep
Have we left destruction or a path of hope
Crushing people further or supporting them cope
On that death bed self reflecting now
There’s no longer a point in having that row
So right now my friend look hard and look deep
What should you change and what should you keep
What do you want for this New Year
For most it’s to live without any fear
To live our best life and one full of grace
Because one day our death bed is all we will face
We can live for ourselves or live for others
We decide our own legacy not any others
For me I own a tortured soul
To strive and survive is my only goal
My face reflects a destroyed human being
So open your eyes and truly start seeing
Death bed is coming and that is a fact
What will we see when we all look back
A life to be proud of or full of disgrace
For you my friend I hope it’s of grace
The New Year now is fast approaching
I’m sitting here thinking and deeply hoping
That you are at peace and not filled with dread
That many years pass before facing that bed
My wish for you is that next year is amazing
As into the future we all are gazing.
