Separated-dividing family home into separate accommodation-can it work?

Has anyone done this after separating? Separate finances, separate front doors. And my own tenancy if owner (in law)agreed.

Would you be sharing the facilities though??? Kitchen/ bathroom/ washing machine etc.....cos that gets really awkward

It's not so much physically splitting the property that would be a problem, but the fact you'll still able to see your DH coming and going, and vice versa.

How long have you been separated for? I have been separated (now divorced) for 21months, living separate for 14months in my own home.

I can't give real advice on will it work because I haven't done it but I know it DEFINITELY wouldn't work for me.

Me and my exH get on well, even still work together but living next door?! No way!

I think as time goes by and you or him get new partners it will not be ideal to see that day in and day out no matter how 'over' the relationship you are.

And I don't know if you have DC but I imagine the temptation for one or the other of you to ask if they could watch the kids for an hour whilst you popped and did x, y and z would be there and frustrating from both sides if it's not the 'agreed time'.

I don't know, I would say the best thing I ever did was get some distance and space but everyone is different 🤷‍♀️

18 months. The top and bottom floors are self contained so no sharing of facilities. Putting in an inner front door at the foot of the stairs would be contentious, but necessary for me. Still pondering...
