Can anyone point me to some initial free legal advice if planning a divorce? If there is such thing?

I won’t to find out what is likely to happen with my pension mainly. I’m the higher earner with better pension and kids would stay with me most of the time (if not all).

Go look
in the internet there’s lots of information

take a look at Advice now

No one will be able to tell
you what will happen, just give guiding principles on fair sharing in the eyes of the law

it comes down to

ages
childten
earnings
assets available
needs of both parties - to house themselves and children

often the higher earner will come off with lower overall %

start at 50:50. Does that provides for both parties needs? If yes, likely to be awarded or near there. If not, factors will be brought in which might sway it

Pensions are a marital asset to be divided like any other asset. Often the weaker party will agree to give up their right to the other one's pension in favour of keeping more equity, but that needs to be considered carefully as pensions can be more valuable - especially if it's a DB one.

Starting point is 50/50 split, which can be departed from if one party's needs are greater (eg lower earning power = greater need).

Pensions are usually equalised in a long marriage were there is little difference in age.
