Feeling overwhelmed by possibility of divorce

I’ve been in marriage for the last 10 years and he has been emotionally abusive for a long time. I have 2 small children and don’t know where to start for the separation. Unsure about whether to separate, and have anxiety of finances. I need free legal advice - do you know the good place?

Ask around solicitors for a free first half hour, it does exist. Plus do as much research as you can on the pinned post at the top

There's a lot you can do. For sure use as many free hours from solicitors as you can like the commenter above suggested. Have a list of questions you want answered ready so you can use your time efficiently too. You can also get a lot of good advice from divorce groups on facebook and here as many are going through or have been through the same thing as you. It really makes you feel better, like you're not alone whilst also getting really good advice from the commenters here.
There's also a bunch of free resources online you should take advantage of like the one the commenter above mentioned. I'll also leave the one I used here as it really helped me out - https://iamlip.com/
For getting started maybe check out this help guide (it says ignore step 1 if the relationship is abusive so I suggest skipping that in your case) - https://iamlip.com/help-guides/pre-divorce/ then see if the others can help you decide the best route for your divorce x
Hope this can give you some clarity on what the best thing to do for you is xx

Thank you both for your advice. I was feeling lonely and helpless so it means a lot to me.
I had called one helpline and he said I’m not eligible to free legal advice, so I’m really happy to know there are places.

i couldn’t find “pinned post” DustyLee123 kindly mentioned, I’m new to mumsnet - where can I find it please?

Anita848 thank you for the link - this looks really helpful. For Facebook group as much as I’d like to join, I’m worried he’ll find out I’m looking into divorce. To be honest I never thought he was being mentally abusive but therapist thinks he has been. For children I’m really unsure if divorce is the best route but being threatened financially I feel I need to seek options now..

thanks again for your kind comments xx
