Hello all - am in financial procedings with textbook narc ex whom was both physically and emotionally abusive. I’m looking to instruct a direct access barrister for the first appointment, in central family court but hearing is remote. Does anyone have any recommendations for a barrister based outside London please? Thank you

I heard Nicholas Wilkinson speak about narcissists on a podcast and he sounds like he really knows what he’s talking about.

Although I don’t think you really need one for the first appointment as it’s a lot of money to pay for someone to come to what is essentially just an admin meeting.

@Mumof3confused thanks! Yes I kind of Nick Wilkinson but also of his eye watering rates! I’m looking for barristers outside London for this reason.

do you have any idea what nick's rates are per day? @Panther127 @Mumof3confused

nevergivingup23 · 18/12/2023 17:04

can't find it anywhere online

NashvilleQueen · 18/12/2023 17:12

You can only see a barrister if they do direct access otherwise you need to go via a solicitor. Whilst they can instruct anyone and should take account of your wishes they may have their own preference based on who they've worked well with in the past. And of course your preferred barrister may not be available.

CuppaTea23 · 18/12/2023 17:29

Not a barrister but I've been recommended Hanni Pennelegion who was apparently fabulous with the narcissist ex, based in Bristol so may not have the lowest non London rates

Thank you all so much. I'm in a bit of a pickle seeing as the Cafcass guardian is currently on ex's side despite evidence of emotional and physical abuse..I need someone who can turn this around for us🙁

morechaimama · 18/12/2023 19:21

Have a look at Silk Family Law in Richmond (North Yorkshire), I think they have an in house barrister.

Panther127 · 18/12/2023 19:23

@nevergivingup23 sorry to hear, that must be v diffucult. I’m not there yet but understand your frustration, SS are ignoring my repeated requests to do an asesssment in spite of mostly emotional abuse.

Yes. She's amazing. If you can afford her I'd choose her every time. But she's expensive

Not used him personally and not sure if he’s the right type of law but heard from two friends that this guy is very good, based in Birmingham and not sure if he’s direct access or not.

@NorthernSpirit did your DH use him on a direct access basis?

NorthernSpirit · 20/12/2023 15:34

Through a solicitor. You would need to check if they do direct access.

My now DH’s EW lied through the entire divorce process. Tom was fabulous and cut through her lies and bullshit very quickly.

He also used the same firm many years later (Tom wasn’t available but he recommended a colleague) when the EW refused to sell the FMH - despite agreeing to years earlier when the consent ordered was agreed. Again - they did a great job.

It seems a huge amount of money at the time - but definitely worth the investment.

Good luck 🤞

DidIMakeaMistake · 20/12/2023 17:37

@Panther127 please see attached from Andrew Day’s X. He’s the only chambers ranked barrister doing what he does out of London. Two friends that use him rate him incredibly highly.
