Selling house and moving to rented. What did you do ref furniture, store or sell?

We are divorcing and selling the marital home which we have lived in for nearly thirty years.

My husband is moving to a rented furnished place and I suspect will only need/want to take minimal stuff.

I am downsizing to a 2/3 bedroom place, but for various reason think I will rent before I decide where I want to move to.

As rental places are so expensive I’m thinking I should rent a smaller place, but what should I do with all my furniture/stuff?

Is storage expensive? I don’t want to sell/give away a load of stuff just to have to buy it at a later date.

What did most of you do? Any advice, tips, things to avoid gratefully received.

I shopped around and put all of my stuff into storage in the 6 months I was renting and looking for a permanent home.
You can really grab a bargain in some places if you shop around.

I would go for the smallest storage area I could get away with.If your furniture is valuable and you love it and really want to keep it then worth paying out.If you would be happy to get rid then I would sell, give away and when you need to buy look on Marketplace.Amazing bargains or even free.A family member is paying £75 for a 3 bed space but could be for over a year probably not worth it .Good luck.

We put ours in storage. Which was a huge mistake.

It ended up costing more than the furniture was worth (and it wasn't cheap furniture). Then we got hit with the cost of paying to get it out of storage.

Small pieces, or flat packable pieces, that you can transport yourself might work out ok. But our sofas really stung us.

You may be better renting a place with one more room and packing it for to ceiling if you don’t think it will be long.

Rent an unfurnished property could be an option if available. Or one with a spare room or garage.
