just to make full disclosure - this isn't happening to me but to a friend.

Friend had initiated divorce proceedings and the financial settlement was being negotiated on the basis that friend could still work but friend has since suffered a serious health episode that may leave them unable to work.

assuming the financial settlement had not been agreed can friend now ask for a greater share of the couple's assets as they may not be able to work again?

Yes. Her earning capacity is lower and her need greater. The court would look at that.
