One of my friends was completely bemused how her ex was paying for high cost divorce solicitors when he wasn't earning and had no money - he'd secured a loan on the house ... anyone experience this?

Experienced what? Knowing that someone had secured a loan on a house? Yes, I've known a few people do this for various reasons.

He's a fool. It will come out of his share of the equity. However, this is what SAHMs who believe they can't afford a solicitor are told to do. To pay their legal bills from their financial settlement.
