Stbxh has stopped paying the mortgage!

I left him and fled to a refuge due to his abusive behaviour. Solicitor said I had enough to get an occupation order but 1. I didn’t want him to know where I was and 2. The bills for our house are unaffordable for me.
Now 3 days after I left he has texted me saying he has cancelled the mortgage direct debit. What can I do? I was hoping that we wouldn’t spend all the equity on legal fees but this seems ludicrous as he is still living in the house.

Forward the text to your solicitor - you can prove that he's the one to stop paying so may work in your favour

I haven’t got a solicitor yet. I need to find one that does legal aid but the only one I’ve seen so far was awful.

Have you contacted the lender? Speak to them about the situation and see if they can do anything in terms of a payment holiday. Have to say it sounds like coercive control and he may not even have done it...

Yes I need to speak to our lender and the police as they want to chat to me. It’s irritating as he can afford to pay the mortgage while he stays in the house so there is no reason not to!

Don't take what he says as gospel - he'll say anything to upset you at this point. Verify his claims with your bank, and ask to speak to someone there about your situation. Good luck.

Go to your bank first thing tomorrow. The shared bank account / direct debit account / mortgage bank. Tell them everything.
My exh was an instant bstard when he realised I meant it, I was leaving and taking my money tap with me.
I told the bank, they removed all overdraft facilities just in case and made a note on the file, in case he tried anything weird.
He did - he emptied everything.
Open a new account in a different bank, just for you.
And - chat to the police?? They asked you?
