50:50 Custody - how to make it work well?

Hello, I'm currently going through a divorce and we are keeping things amicable for the children. We both have the best for the kids at heart and have made some good practical decisions together (staying in the same town, getting similar size houses,...).
My ex would like the kids 50/50. Initially I was surprised as he works long hours far away, but he is willing to change that for the children. I have a super flexible job. We have similar earnings, so i'm not interested in getting maintenance.
I want the kids to be happy and know that we're both there for them, we just can't continue living together.
Anyone have a good experience with this? I hear sometimes that 50/50 is not the best as the kids are never in the same house long enough? Also, would they need a main residence? (both houses are in the same school catchment - 10 minute walk from each other) Has anyone ever started this and had to change plans? thanks!

Be careful he has the intention of actually having the kids rather than paying lip service to it to reduce child maintenance.

50-50 can be worked in a number of ways, e.g. a. 2 5 5 2 system where they have Mon Tues at one house, Weds Thurs at the other, and alternative long weekends. This can be extended to longer periods in holidays.

Not alternate nights as someone I know has-the poor kid has to take everything with him to school everyday. I would say sat/sun to wed with maybe alternate long weekends. So 4/3 alternating
