What to get in order before saying you want a divorce

I've seen a number of posts on here in the past advising to get things in order before telling your partner you want a divorce. What things? Is the main concern that the partner will hide money? I organise our finances so not sure what he could hide from me?
TIA

I think it's usually said where someone is in an abusive or controlling relationship.

For me, I had all my financial documents, passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate - that kind of thing. Also I made sure I had all of DS's documents. Anything I knew I wanted to take I moved to where it could be gathered up easily, without being too obvious about it. I also saw a solicitor to make sure I knew what my legal rights were.

Remember - you cannot legally throw him out and change the locks, despite advice given on here!!!
