Will I have more rights to custody?

I currently live with my partner although he works away (sometimes for months at a time). The house mostly belongs to me although he owns 5% of the equity which I gave him when we remortgaged, he hasnt put any money in for a deposit and I owned it for 10 years before he moved in. We have a 5 week old baby. I am thinking about ending the relationship as he currently goes out drinking until 4 am and to be honest I don't love him. He loves our DD and really want him to be close to her. My major concern is that if we spilt up will he be entitled to 50/50 access if he ended up with a job closer to home? I can't bear the thought of being away from her and if that's the case then I will just stay in the relationship. He is on the birth certificate and I'm struggling to find out what generally happens in separations. Do mothers mostly end up with custody? Thanks
