How do tax credits work if you're still in the same house?

My divorce is going through

The house hasn't sold yet but hopefully will soon

As far as tax credits are concerned, are we still together or separate?

We spend virtually no time together. He spends half the week hundreds of miles away. We have had separate bedrooms for over two years, we each do our own laundry and mostly don't cook for one another

Same here. I called them and wrote to confirm the situation; they said it was fine so long as we could prove we are separated if they send someone round to spot check. Separate bank accounts, rooms and cooking, plus I have all the relevant divorce papers so can definitely prove we aren't together.

I was told that because he is still paying towards the mortgage, it means I'm still financially dependent on him so they can't do it as a single person

I took a while to apply, I was so anxious about getting a visit from the benefits squad. But then I bit the bullet and applied, and got a lump sum of backdated TCs and am now getting them weekly. Can't believe it. Been getting only child benefit into my account for YEARS.
