Ex thinks 50/50 split of assets is unfair to him

I called time on our 13y marriage (22y relationship) 3 years ago. We are amicable and have both admitted an element of blame in the breakdown. No other parties involved. Kids now 17 and 13.

We sold family home, split proceeds equally, bought his n hers houses a couple of streets apart. Divorce paperwork has started (we've both completed Form E and sent them to my solicitor). He says he is distrustful of lawyers and is going to make me an offer. Then he went on to say that our agreement to split assets 50/50 was very unfair on him and not what most judges would award!

(He earns about £700,000 a year. I was a sahm mother for 16y.)

On what basis did he suggest that 50:50 isn't fair?? It's usually about needs and I assume children live mostly with you?

Each case is very different but assuming his 50% meant he could afford a house without a large mortgage (and he's able to work or not having to work past retirement age).
If the assets are split already is he proposing you sell your house?

A court may decide that it's appropriate that you earn but your age is relevant and also his.I suspect on reflection he's regretting his decision but he might be foolish to go to court as could get worse.Did your solicitor suggest you got a great deal?

Is he a genius? If not, this article last week would suggest courts "should be starting at a 50/50 split and then looking to see if there is any good reason to depart from equality,"

He is taking the piss, he won't get more.

No way would he get as much as 50%. Instruct a solicitor, it will be worth it.

He is absolutely correct, few judges if any would award him half the assets. He'd get less, unless your earnings are in the same ballpark as his.

What does your solicitor say?

I think your husband is whinging about how 50% is unfair to him as part of a strategy to offer you 50% in the near future so that you then snatch his hand off. He is a game player.

So play the game. Speak to your solicitor. And be prepared to instruct a new solicitor if need be. In the meantime, do not be drawn in to his nonsense. Just tell him that the solicitor is dealing with all of the finances.
