Getting legal advice (just in case)

My OH and I have been at crisis point for months. I'm hoping for a fix, but am not feeling very positive. We are not married. Have two children. I work in a crappy paid PT job
Would anyone know how much (roughly) it costs to see a family lawyer? And is it common to get a first free consultation?

Most offer a free half hour and will lay out their costs then. When I visited mine it was £190 per hour, £25 per letter and so on. The prices do vary quite dramatically depending on area you live in and the solicitors you choose.
