How many years do you have to have been married to qualify for spousal maintenance

Hi

I'm asking this question for a friend she has been married 20 years and is not sure if she would be entitled to spousal maintenance, she does not currently work due to illness.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Have you posted in legal? You'll get proper advice on there.

It's not as simple as that; spousal is rare, and it's a mix of things that would result in it, and it's normally short term too. There's no set number of years required. It's something that really requires specific legal advice.

From what I've read on MN there doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. And is down to the judge who looks at the case. If she suffers from ill health and is unable to work then it's possible the judge will look up her case favourable.
