when to tell the children

sorry I'm relatively new to mn I posted this on another thread and someone suggested posting it here too. my dh and I are separating. when do u tell the children? before? if so how long? on the day he leaves? I've seen some books recommended on here which I an going to look into as well. any advice greatly received.

We told DD the day after the decision was made. As we have 50:50 shared care we switched to each taking her to and from school in the pattern that it would be whilst still living in the same house so not too many changes. He then moved out 1 month later. We went down the not making each other happy so better to have two happy houses rather than one unhappy house.
