Can anybody tell me what is the cheapest and quickest way to get divorced?

Hi,

Have been separated for over 2 years and have nothing to split, no house, no DC's (my DP has a daughter which is why I use mumsnet), no debt or anything. We get on really well and have no disputes. We just want a quick easy divorce that doesn't cost hundreds, does that exsist?!

You can get the forms from court or the Internet yourself and ask the court clerk to check them for you or quickiedivorce.com do them for about £30.

Posterofapombear I saw that site when I googled but that seems to easy! I thought maybe it was a con, could I really get divorced for £30?!

I am just going through this with the exact same circumstances. You can do it all yourself - which is what I am doing and you don't need to go to any quickie divorce website and you don't need a solicitor. If you go to www.gov.uk/divorce it tells you everything you need to know and you can print out the forms. It costs £340 to file for a divorce and another £45 on top when you get to the final stage.
The first part is the divorce petition which is where you fill out a form x3 and then send these with your cheque to your nearest court - this get sents to your ex who agrees and then there are another 3 stages after that before you get the decree absolute. I am currently at the stage before this and applying for the decree nisi.
The only issue I have had with the forms is that the wording can be confusing - some of it is like reading Old English! If you get anything wrong though the courts just send you back the paperwork and mark what you have missed. Also you can phone the court and ask for advice on how the form can be filled.

If you want to go through Quickie Divorce.com or something like that, you can expect to pay another £200 on top.

If you are prepared to do some research and form filling the cheapest way to divorce is to do it yourself. The form D8, guides D183 & D185 and list of court fees EX50 are all available to download free from the Ministry of Justice website. The Which? guide to divorce gives you the basics and solicitor John Bolch has written book "Do You Own Divorce" which you can download form his website at Familylore I believe.

Thank you all so much for your advice. There is so much out there and so many different options it was getting confusing!

I will look at all those websites and get the forms sorted, am totally happy to do it myself, my ex doesn't have a job so I will have to pay for it and because of that I want to keep the costs as low as possible.

It can be as easy and straightforward as set out above. Don't forget though you will need to send your original marriage certificate to the Court with the divorce petition (and you won't get it back) so if you don't know where it is start looking now
