Do you pay council tax as a single mum?

Hi.
I am trying to work out finances before splitting with H. Once he has gone I will be a sahm on benefits. Do I have to pay council tax? Without maintenance which I dont want to factor in, in case, I seem to have £160/ month after bills for food/petrol/ general day to day expenses which is frightening for me and 3dc.

If you are not working then probably not. You need to look at the online calculator for your council to find out. Mine has an income threshold below which you can claim council tax benefit. I assume its largely the same nationwide. You don't have to declare maintenance, only savings. If you have savings of more than £6k you arnt entitled to some benefits.
If you are planning to live on income support you will get most stuff plus free prescriptions etc.
have a look at the benefits calculator on money saving expert and don't forget tax credits.
After that it it's still scary look at the credit crunch threads I learned masses from them about how to claim everything and survive as a line parent. Good luck

You will get full council tax benefit but from April 2013 its being cut back. In what shape or form nobody knows yet. I am worried as things are tight enough already.

I am a single Mum, I get a single adult reduction, I don't work.

income support, child tax credits, single person council tax rate and council tax benefiy.

are yoi renting? if so housing benefit, if not there us a scheme that whilst you are on income support you can claim towards your mortgage, it is a payment towards the intetest on your mortgage at the bank of england rate.
