Is there a thread for parents of children with T1 diabetes? Ive had a look but haven't spotted one.

My child was recently diagnosed and would be good to talk to parents in the same situation.

Hi, I think I saw your later post, then lost it and found the earlier one instead! My son has T1, diagnosed nearly a year ago now. Yes, it's tough. We have no diabetes in the family so it was a total shock. Before this I had no idea how difficult and all consuming diabetes management is. My son is doing really well but I still feel so sad for him every day and what he's having to go through. We're still trying to make contact with other T1 kids. He's on the Omnipod pump and it really makes life easier so do push to move to a pump as soon as you can.

Facebook has some useful groups like Diabetic Kids Mums UK and especially T1 rights at school which has loads of useful info on what you should expect from school in terms of support. Do be careful with Facebook groups though. I joined many and found a lot of inhabited by peopple who are really struggling to manage their diabetes and the general feel was negative. I left as I found them demotivating. I also avoid the pages that strongly push low carb for kids.

Have a look at groups local to you. Where I live we have a volunteer led group that organises lots of activities for diabetic kids, including a residential activity weekend run by diabetes nurses. It's a good chance to chat with other families. Check here for your area https://volunteer.diabetes.org.uk/teams/

Have you been told about Disability Living Allowance? You can apply after 3 months of diagnosis. I'm happy to help with that.

I hope your family is adjusting ok. Feel free to PM me.
