T2 metformin/insulin how to lose weight

Hi I'm 56yrs old I've been T2 for many years , sugars have been out of control , was put on insulin ( twice a day ) alongside metformin (3 x day) a few years back, also have Pcos & under active thyroid . I am trying to turn things around , I am about 15kg overweight. I have started low carb and brisk walking of 30 mins once or twice daily . Nothing seems to shift the weight , I assume this is due to the insulin ? Any advice appreciated

Have you been offered ozempic or discussed it with your doctor? With PCOS and T2, ozempic might help with the IR and the high blood glucose. Weightloss would be a side benefit.

Hi doctor has discussed it , I wasn't too sure about taking another drug to add to the list !

You need to have a chat with your doctor about how you’re going to handle your T2 diabetes. Simplistically, Metformin works by inhibiting the uptake of sugars from what you eat, but also inhibits fat from being burnt for energy. If you’re going low carb and avoiding eating carbs/sugars in the first place, Metformin is working against you. Insulin is trying to encourage sugars to convert to fat - again, not compatible with low carb for weight loss where you want the opposite.

Your diabetes seems to have developed to the point where you need proper advice to come up with a plan that you understand and can implement.

Ask to be put on the Counterweight diet. I did this and lost 4 stone and my diabetes is now in remission.

It's a diabtetes programme with an NHS dietician

@evilkitten is talking a load of nonsense. Metformin doesn’t stop you losing weight, all it does is improve insulin resistant, in general it makes you lose weight not gain it

Are you counting calories? Insulin just means that your body can actually use the calories you eat, so if you’re eating less than you burn you should still lose weight. If you’re not losing weight you may be eating too much. It’s easy to eat high calorie on low carb because you tend to eat more fat which is calorie dense.

I have not been counting calories , I will look at doing that
