Power cut and insulin in fridge

SpittinKitten · 27/12/2022 17:07

I had a power cut from 11:30 last night to 2:30 this afternoon. My insulin pens (novomix 30 flexpen) are kept in the fridge until they're needed - once opened they stay at room temp. Will the unused ones still be ok to use with the fridge being off for over 12 hours? Or should I ask my GP for a new batch?

Thanks!

They will be fine. My H carries them on long haul plane journeys which are just the same thing.

The fridge should stay cold enough as long as you weren’t opening the door every 5 minutes. You could ring your diabetic nurse tomorrow and ask just for peace of mind.

I think have 28 days to use them once they have been taken out of the fridge, will you use them by then?

SpittinKitten · 27/12/2022 17:31

Thanks all! I'll use them in the next 28 days, yep. Fridge was kept firmly closed throughout!

No use for you today but one of my DCs uses medication that has to be kept in the fridge, and we're on a priority list with National Grid (I think?? Or maybe our local supplier) for reconnection in the event of a power cut for this reason. Might be worth looking into.

Im on it already @Parmavi0lets . Thanks for the suggestion though.

Tbf I reported it online about half an hour in, and someone from Powergrid came out within an hour (it just took ages after that to reconnect us - the text I got this morning said it was because of a fault on one of their cables).

They will be fine to use but you should store them outside of the fridge now. With a temperature deviation the pens are then treated as being in use and have 28 days to be used.
