I've just peeked at my test results

They say my plasma glucose levels are
9.6mmol/L

Google isn't helping me much and I'm trying to skim past the bad bits.

Am I fucked? It says I need to go back for another test.

I had a sugary drink before I went for my blood test as I'm not usually stable with them. I'm hoping this could raise my glucose levels?

I am however overweight. And the weight loss is in progress.

I'm shitting it.

We're just giving this thread a bump for the OP to get it back into Active Conversations. Hopefully some Mumsnetters will be along soon with some advice and support.

Did they not do a fasting test?

cantmovewont · 05/03/2021 08:47

I'm guessing you're worried about Tyoe 2?

I'm a mum to Type 1. Whilst 9.6 is high, it's not as high as DS would be after a sugary drink (with no pancreatic function at all). You probably know that the normal levels are generally 3.9-6.9. I've known my nephew ( non diabetic who wanted to see what the finger prick felt like) to be around 9 after his dinner. I think double digits are usually what raises concerns (for Type 1 diagnosis0.

Did you take the teat yourself? Try first thing in the morning when you wake up. This will give you a more accurate reading.

Well the sugary drink could be the cause if it was close before. But it could also be type 2. The "good" thing about being overweight for you is that you might get it under control by losing weight.

Don't be scared. The scary diabetes side effects tend to happen after years of difficult control. With all the medical possibilities at the moment, controlling diabetes is quite possible for the vast majority of people.

The other test will be a fasting test (you'll fast beforehand usually overnight). So I wouldn't worry as it'll likely be the sugary drink you had!!

ODFOx · 05/03/2021 09:41

The sugary drink may well have affected the result. What was your Hba1c? That will give a better indication of your blood sugar over the last few weeks.
If they were worried about diabetes I'd have expected them to ask for fasting glucose, so presumably that isn't what they are looking for.

Thank you for your replies. It was a blood test to see why I have been so tired etc at the moment. So not specifically for diabetes.

Just had a call from the dr and he wants to do a fasting test.

I'm guessing I just need to up the ante on the diet programme then
